With the sex positivity of Netflix’s Sex Education and the hapless comedy of Fleishman Is in Trouble, COMING SECOND will appeal to adults and teens interested in a face-paced, cinematic read.
When his book trailer for his cousin’s sex manual goes viral, Jack thinks he’s got it made. His mom will have to acknowledge his talent and pay for NYU film school, his dick will no longer be cursed, and he might even earn back respect from Hannah, who gave up on Jack when he couldn’t find the courage to kiss her on the mountain top.
But all his dreams fade to black when the star of the trailer, Lieba, becomes famous overnight and claims she made the trailer with the cleft-chinned son of a Hollywood agent—not pudgy, little Jack. Jack's cousin Audrey—under deadline to finish the manuscript that could neutralize Jack's family curse—insists he needs to expose Lieba's lie. Unfortunately, Jack succumbs to his overly cautious nature and, fearing Lieba's wrath, refuses to set the record straight. It's only when Lieba double crosses his father that Jack realizes he must go public with the truth—even if it means exposing his own nasty little lie.
A high school librarian for more than twenty years, I’ve trade published four YA novels, both In Your Dreams and Thick making it onto an ALA best-of list. I wish I’d had access, when I was young, to a book as sexually honest and shameless as COMING SECOND. As a librarian, I have no doubt I would have bought it for my students.
